This week I had the honor of meeting the first Latino California Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable Cruz Reynoso. I aspire to become a justice one day, but without trailblazers like him, that idea would never have occurred to me.
Having representation in the bar and on the bench is valuable because it ensures that more than just white straight men’s perspectives are included in the conversation. AND representation is important for showing young brown people growing up in this political climate that we can succeed despite the institutional road blocks in our way. It was such a grounding experience to meet one of the greats, and one day I hope to be up there with him as the first Latina California Supreme Court Justice from OAKLAND.
